Science
with Mrs Cathy James
Hello everyone my name is Cathy James and I am very excited to be the new science teacher at WHPS. This term, the Preps, 1/2's, and 3/4's will be learning all about the five senses to tie in with our school theme of 'all about me'. The focus will be 'hands on' learning with plenty of experiments to touch, see, taste, smell and hear. The 3/4's
will take things a little further and look at the function and structure of the eyes, ears, tongue and nose. We may be able to have a close up look in the 3/4 grades at an animal’s tongue and eye.
The 5/6's term will revolve around the study of the brain to compliment their leadership theme and we will also touch on the nervous system to see how that links with the brain. First up in a hands on session the senior grades will learn what a brain feels like and throughout the term we will look at the brains main parts and its function. We will study the role of sleep on the brain and also how we can best protect it. There will be an opportunity to dissect a sheep’s brain to have a good look inside!
I am really looking forward to discovering lots of new things with the children.

Library
Watsonia Heights Library is a fantastic Resource Centre. There is a variety of books, texts, posters, cassette tapes, videos, and computers and much more for both staff and students to access. Children learn how to access information through a variety of Medias during their weekly Library lesson. The Library also provides classrooms with a range of reading materials and research information. Students attend the library weekly with their grade to learn how to use a library. They can also borrow a number of books to take home.
